Tips For Finding The Perfect Lake Home

For many people, buying a lake home is a lifelong dream come true. Like buying any property, purchasing a lake home is a major decision that should never be rushed. To ensure that you make the most out of your investment, consider the following before making your purchase:

1. It’s All About The Water!

When looking for the perfect lake house, make sure you leverage your number one asset: The lake! It may seem obvious, but many people forget that there are different considerations you need to make with water lots. The first question you should ask yourself is, what are the shoreline conditions? You should make sure you have enough shoreline to accommodate a dock/pier and it will provide the lifestyle activities you desire. After all, this is where you will be spending all your time!

2. Topography Is Important!

Are you going to be exploring the lake by boat, or simply enjoying the beautiful views? Lots of folks are only willing to consider a flat lot, but flat lots are flat under the water surface too. Flat lot equals shallower water, where steeper lots tend to equal deeper water. If you’re mostly going to be swimming and floating, then a flat lot is perfect for you. If you’re going to be taking the boat out every weekend, opt for a steeper lot with deeper water.

3. Bring The Outside Inside!

Well-designed lake homes have a good bit more covered outdoor living space than non-lakefront homes. The reason for this is because it is more fun being outside at the lake! The best way to bring the outdoors in is to maximize views with larger than normal windows so you can see all that nature has to offer. Then, you should create enough covered outdoor spaces to screen some of them. That way you are actually bridging the transition from inside to outside and vice-versa. You know you have it right when you step outside in the morning and you don’t return in until dinner time!

These are just a few of the dozens it items to consider when searching for your dream lakefront home. If you want to “dive into” some real specifics, ask about our 37-point checklist for lakefront home buyers!
