No Airport Needed for This Lake-Friendly Plane

Icon A-5Everything about the Icon Aircraft A5, from its retractable wings to its ability to take off and land on water (no airport required), is designed with recreational pilots in mind. Even the cockpit looks more like a Mercedes that a Boeing. Could this be the perfect addition to your lakefront home?

The two-person A5 has a 34-foot wingspan and can carry a load of up to 1,510 pounds. The A5 is intended for so-called sport pilots, a license category that only required a minimum of 20 hours of training. Sports pilots can fly during the day, under 10,000 feet, in uncongested airspace.

Icon A-5ICON Aircraft’s mission is to bring the freedom, fun, and adventure of flying to all who have dreamed of flight.  The FAA’s dramatic 2004 regulation changes that created the Light Sport Aircraft category have redefined the possibilities for aviation and allowed ICON to “reinvent flying” by focusing on the consumer experience.

After 8 years of planning and fundraising, the $189,000 A5 will go into production this year, with 1,000 preorders already lined up.
